Magical theory questions
Feb. 7th, 2005 03:08 pmI've been thinking about pensieves, and how they work, and applications there of for the past few days, and I got to wondering how a pensieve works with thoughts that aren't memories.
We get a pretty clear idea from canon about how pensieves work in terms of memories, at least when viewed by someone other than the person whose memory it is, but what about thought that aren't visual? What would have happened if instead of falling into Dumbledore's memories of the trials, Harry had fallen into some esoteric thought about magical theory, or a complicated Arithmancy equation, or some such? Can one fall into a non-sensory thought? More over, can one store a non-visual thought in the pensieve if it is actually ment to be use the way we see Dumbledore use it in GoF?
Also, in GoF Dumbledore can obviously remember the thoughts that are in the pensieve, yet in OotP Snape uses the pensieve to keep Harry from finding memories he doesn't want him to see. Do you guys think that Snape is using a different variant of the magical process to remove the memories from his brain, or is it just another inconsistency in JKR's (lack of) magical theory?
